Agama Care Sheet

As of today, exotic pets are very popular in the world. Even some known lizards are already in the list of famous exchange in pet trade. Agamas, from the genus Agamidae, are few of the said well-known lizards who touched the hearts of many pet lovers.

Agamas are found mostly in dry areas of Africa, Southwestern and East Asia, and as far as South Europe. They are  called the Old World lizards which consisted of 60 species regardless with the big number of subspecies. They are comfortable lying down the sands of the deserts or resting on the rocky edges. They have spiny scales around their head. Males tend to have bigger heads than females considering that they have anal pores also. Their color varies from brown to gray. They can also change their color depending upon the weather or situation. They are somehow terrestrial and can sometimes be arboreal. If you want to have a pet like this, their main diet is any small invertebrates. They are mostly carnivorous but can eat also with any organic greens. However, as they grow, you can already feed them with small mice.

Wild Agamas  live on a colony thus being a territorial animal is also normal for them. Males are highly preferred to be house separately. While, every breeding season, females are the ones which make the move. They courted the males. After a successful mating, the females are expected to lay 2 to 20 eggs and must  wait for about 1.5 to 4.5 months before the eggs will hatch. With their housing, you must provide a spacious area for them where they have a hiding place. Basically, Agamas are shy animals and are not comfortable being observed by someone.

Temperature is also one of the basic things to consider when having your own Agamas. They require proper hibernation specially for those who are living in Northern part.

Agamas have many subspeicies in line. Some of them are A. agama, A. agilis, A. atra, A. Atricollis, A. caucasia, A. impalearis, A. lehmanni, A. mutabilis, A. planiceps, A. stello and etc.
