Small lizards has been in the popular trend of exotic pets for many years. There are wide varieties of species from small to giants. One specie consider to be on high demand is the butterfly lizards.
They are natives from Southern China to Indo-China up to Sumatra. They are from the genus Agamidae with the subfamily of Leiolepis. They are ground dwellers and mostly burrow their body underneath the soil or sand. Their body is mainly 50 (20”)cm long and is also slightly flattened. They have round heads and long tails with caudal scales into it. Dorsal scales are small and males have femoral pores.
When having your very own butterfly lizard, they should be kept in a housing which allows them to be in comfort. Porper substrate is also a must. Temperature during daytime must range from 30C to 35C while during the night, temperature can be lower for about ten degrees. Their main diets are insects but possibilty of eating plant might somehow occur. As for mating, they are strictly monogamous,which means they allow only one mating pair at a time. Being well known to live in such tropical climate,they require water all the time.
There are many known species and commonly found in most dry lands. Some of them are Butterfly agama of Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sand lizard of Thailand, and Thai butterfly lizards of Thailand also. There still many varieties of species found in many pet trade so if you want to have a butterfly lizard, you have a lot of option to choose from.
