Roaches are nasty little bugs. I hate even touching them, but this is the only insect food that I feed to my reptiles. There are many choices on what type of roaches you can use. The two most common feeder roaches are Dubia and Lobster.
The great thing about dubia roaches is that they can not climb and they can not fly! The adults can get up to two inches long. That is the only downside to me. Most of my reptiles cant eat that size of food.
The roach that I prefer to use is the Lobster. They reproduce like crazy and only get about an inch in size. The down side is that they can climb. They way I get around this is to put a layer of Crisco around the top of their tanks.
My roach colony setup:
I use a 54 gallon Rubbermaid tote for their cage. I give them a high protein dog food along with lettuce, gourds, and any other high water based food. I feed the dog food once a week. I give them lettuce on Mondays and the gourds on Wednesdays. They need to be kept on a hot side temp of 90 degrees. I use a under tank heater from Petsmart for $30 bucks. This keeps them breeding all the time.
Remember you can start your colony with only 100 roaches. You will need to wait a couple of monther before you feed them off though.
If you are looking for some roaches here are a couple of links to some good bugs.
These are two of the top people that are good at roaches. If you visit any forums ask around on them. You can find some great deals. I got my “100″ for free. He just wanted me to pay for shipping. He sent me like 300 of them and I was very excited.
Let me know via comment where you got your colony and how well it is doing.
